New Jersey has the cheapest course in this series pointed at the most expensive insurance market in it, which makes the cost question here less "what does it cost" and more "why haven't you taken it yet."
The MVC-approved 6-hour online defensive driving course runs $24.95 to $29 as of August 2026, Improv at $24.95 and iDriveSafely at $29. Prices move, treat that as a snapshot, but this has been a sub-$30 purchase for years and there's no reason to pay more. There's no state fee stacked on the standard course. The $75 admin fee you may see referenced belongs to the separate Driver Improvement Program, the classroom course the MVC orders for drivers at 12 to 14 points; nobody signs up for that one voluntarily.
Here's what makes New Jersey's math unique. The course doesn't dismiss tickets, and its 2-point credit only helps drivers already carrying points. But New Jersey law mandates that insurers give course completers a discount of at least 5%, and up to 10%, for three full years, claimable once every three years. New Jersey premiums are among the highest in the country, which is exactly why our data shows a typical 10-over ticket carrying just a $96 fine but roughly $4,869 in three-year insurance exposure as a ceiling estimate. On premiums that size, even the 5% floor typically returns the $25 course cost many times over across three years, ticket or no ticket. This is the one state where the course is arguably a better purchase for drivers with clean records than for drivers with tickets.
One process cost to respect: the discount doesn't apply itself. Your provider notifies the MVC for the point credit, but you send the completion certificate to your insurance company for the discount. Skip that step and you bought a $25 course and earned nothing.
