Which online driver improvement clinic should I use in Virginia?

Virginia operates a unique two-direction point system administered by the DMV: drivers accumulate demerit points for violations and earn safe driving points for clean years (one per year, capped at five). Voluntarily completing an 8-hour DMV-approved Driver Improvement Clinic credits 5 safe driving points to your record once every 24 months under Va. Code §§46.2-489 and 46.2-498, with the clinic capped at $100. Important caveat: the safe-driving-points credit and the insurance-discount benefit are mutually exclusive. You must declare your purpose at registration and choose one. The DMV-issued Online Driver Improvement Clinic Certificate (Form DIC 552B) is the only document the courts and DMV will accept as proof of completion. Court-ordered clinic attendance, required for drivers who accumulate excessive demerit points or as part of sentencing, must be completed within 90 days or the driver's license will be suspended; the court determines whether safe-driving points are awarded for court-ordered completions. CDL holders cannot receive demerit-point relief through the clinic for offenses committed in commercial vehicles.

The True Cost of a Ticket in Virginia

Virginia drivers pay a $111 fine and about $1,707 in three-year insurance surcharges for a 10-mph-over ticket, roughly $1,818 all-in. The fine is about 6% of the total. Virginia's Driver Improvement Clinic (Va. Code §§ 46.2-489 and 46.2-498) allows either dismissal (court-discretionary) or a 5 safe-driving-point credit, available once every 24 months. Course tuition typically runs $45 to $75. Where the court allows dismissal, the return on a $75 course is roughly 24x against the avoided $1,700 surcharge. Even where dismissal is unavailable, the 5-point safe-driving credit is one of the more generous point mechanisms in the country and materially helps carrier risk scoring at renewal. For a Virginia driver, the course is a strong move regardless of the exact court outcome.
