Virginia is the rare state that regulates the price of the course itself: by law, a driver improvement clinic can't charge more than $100. In practice you'll pay well under half that. As of August 2026, iDriveSafely's approved 8-hour clinic runs $39 and Improv's runs $39.95, and the online market clusters in the $40 to $75 band. Prices move, so treat those as a snapshot, but anything approaching the $100 cap is buying you nothing extra; the clinic is standardized by the DMV and the certificate is the certificate.

What the money buys depends on the door you enter through, and Virginia makes you choose. Enroll voluntarily and your $40 buys either up to 5 safe driving points, once every 24 months, or an insurance discount, never both from one attendance, and you commit at enrollment. If a court sent you, the same tuition rides along with your case and the court decides what you get; court-ordered drivers don't qualify for the insurance discount at all. If the DMV ordered you in after too many demerits, the $40 isn't buying a benefit, it's keeping your license, and you have 90 days to spend it.

Two groups pay differently by necessity: drivers under 20 and CDL holders can't take the clinic online and need the classroom version, where pricing varies by location.

Against the ticket, the math is friendly. Our Virginia data puts a typical 10-over citation at a $111 fine and roughly $1,707 in three-year insurance exposure as a ceiling estimate. Where a court allows the clinic to resolve the ticket, $40 against $1,700 is a return few financial products offer. Even the consolation prize, 5 safe driving points restoring your balance, is the most generous voluntary credit in the country per dollar spent.
