Florida drivers who receive a non-criminal moving violation can complete a 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course to keep points off their driving record under Fla. Stat. § 318.14(9). Election must be made within 30 days of the citation, and a driver may use this option once per 12 months and up to eight times in a lifetime (§ 318.14(9), as amended by ch. 2025-77; FLHSMV's FAQ still shows the old five-election limit). Completing BDI means adjudication is withheld: no points are added and your insurer is not notified of that violation, though the citation itself stays on your record as a withheld adjudication. BDI is not available to CDL holders or for a crash involving injuries. Florida also runs an 8-hour Intermediate Driver Improvement (IDI) course for certain repeat situations and a 12-hour Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course for suspension or habitual-offender cases; neither is a voluntary BDI substitute. The True Cost of a Ticket in Florida
Florida drivers pay a $204 fine and about $3,966 in three-year insurance surcharges (an estimate from CarInsurance.com and Quadrant Information Services rate data, not a state figure; your insurer's actual surcharge varies) for a 10-mph-over ticket, roughly $4,170 all-in. The fine is about 5% of the total bill. Florida has one of the strongest driver-side statutes in the country. Under Fla. Stat. § 318.14(9), a driver who timely elects a Basic Driver Improvement course before pleading has adjudication withheld: no points are added to the driving record. Separately, Fla. Stat. § 626.9541(1)(o)12 prevents insurers from imposing an additional premium or refusing renewal based solely on that specific infraction. BDI is available once every 12 months and up to eight times in a lifetime (§ 318.14(9), as amended in 2025; FLHSMV's FAQ still shows the old five-election limit, but the statute controls). Course tuition runs $4 to $25. Election has to happen before you pay or plead, and missing the window means the option is gone. Does Florida traffic school dismiss my ticket?
