Ticket in New Jersey, license from another state?
This page is written for drivers who hold a New Jersey license. If you got the ticket in New Jerseybut your license is from another state, different rules decide what reaches your home state's record and whether a course helps.
Read the out-of-state ticket guideNew Jersey license, ticket from another state? Same guide, other direction.
New Jersey's MVC-approved Defensive Driving Course provides two mandated benefits for eligible drivers: a 2-point reduction on the driving record, and an insurance discount of 5% to 10% for three years on liability, personal injury protection, and collision coverage (NJ Admin Code 11:3-24.4). The course does not dismiss the underlying ticket. The conviction still appears on the record. Approved online courses run about 6 hours. Course tuition averages $25. The point reduction is available once every five years, the insurance discount once every three years. The mandated discount is worth several hundred dollars per year on the average New Jersey premium, one of the strongest structured discount programs in the country. New Jersey drivers with any moving violation on their record should consider the course as a routine hedge, not an emergency response.
Insurance discount only
Traffic school in New Jersey is for an insurance discount, not ticket dismissal. Confirm the discount with your insurer before enrolling.
The True Cost of a Ticket in New Jersey
New Jersey drivers face a $96 fine and about $4,869 in three-year insurance surcharges for a 10-mph-over ticket, roughly $4,965 all-in. The fine is under 2% of the total bill. New Jersey has one of the largest fine-to-surcharge gaps in the country. New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission grants a 2-point credit for approved defensive-driving course completion, available once every five years. The conviction itself stays on the record. The state MVC surcharge (separate from insurance) only triggers at 6+ points in three years. Under N.J.S.A. 17:33B-45.1, carriers are separately required to apply a rate reduction after an approved course, which chips into the insurance side of the ticket. Course tuition runs $29 to $50. The 2-point credit is useful for drivers close to a suspension threshold, and the mandated rate reduction is a partial hedge on the surcharge. But New Jersey drivers should not expect a course to prevent the full insurance impact of the ticket.

When a lawyer beats traffic school
New Jersey has no course that dismisses a ticket. The online course only trims points you already carry. If the ticket threatens surcharges or your license, fighting it is the only lever.

If none of these describe your situation, an online course is very likely the cheaper, faster path in New Jersey. Compare your options below.
