New Jersey runs the same two-clock design as New York, with stingier settings on the points side.
Clock one: the 2-point reduction is available once every five years, and it only fires if you're carrying at least 2 points when you complete the course. Five years is a long interval for a small credit, which makes timing everything. A driver who takes the course reflexively after a first minor ticket spends the five-year slot on points that would matter least; a driver climbing toward the 6-point threshold where New Jersey's MVC surcharges begin is spending it exactly where it pays. Check your point total before you enroll for this reason, and remember the credit can't be banked in advance: no points on the record at completion, no reduction, slot potentially wasted.
Clock two is the friendlier one: the state-mandated insurance discount, at least 5% and up to 10% for three years, is claimable once every three years, and renewing it is as simple as taking the course again when the cycle ends. The clocks run independently. A course taken in 2026 for the discount doesn't block a points-motivated course later; each benefit checks only its own history. Just route the paperwork correctly each time, provider to MVC for points, you to your insurer for the discount.
